LG OLED C1 vs CX Review

LG OLED C1 is part of LG’s 2021 OLED TV lineup and at the same time is also the replacement of the LG OLED CX, one of most popular OLED TVs in 2020. As a newer model, the OLED C1 brings a few minor tweaks and upgrades that expected it can perform better than the OLED CX. Just like most model of OLED TVs, they both are excellent TV for mixed usage. Although they still have some minor shortcomings, but in general, they offer excellent performance in almost all aspects of picture quality and features. There are a lot of aspects of OLED TVs than cannot be matched by LED TVs such as their infinity contrast ratio, pixel dimming level, nearly instantaneous pixel response time, extremely wide viewing angle, etc. Nevertheless, if compared to premium LED TVs, OLED TV is not so bright, so they are certainly are not suitable when used in a very bright room with direct light or at the outdoor. But even so, overall, OLED TVs including the OLED C1 and CX are great TVs for any usage.

In the market, LG OLED CX and C1 come in a lot of screen size variant. There are 48 inches (OLED48C1PUB vs OLED48CXPUB), 55 inches (OLED55C1PUB vs OLED55CXPUA), (OLED05C1PUB vs OLED54CXPUA), and 27 inches (OLED77C1PUB vs OLED77CXPUB). If in last year, LG has released it’s the smallest commercial OLED TV with the number model of OLED48CXPUB, in this year, they have released the biggest commercial OLED TV that has 83 inches of screen size with the number model of OLED83C1PUA. Meanwhile, with the same screen size (OLED48C1 vs OLED48CX, OLED55C1 vs OLED55CX, OLED65C1 vs OLED65CX, OLED77C1 vs OLED77CX), as a newer model, the OLED C1 is sold hundreds dollar more expensive than the OLED CX predecessor. But of course, this is more influenced that the price of the LG CX has dropped a lot. So, what tweaks and upgrades offered by the LG C1 over the LG CX?

One of the major advantages of OLED TV including LG OLED C1 and CX is their infinite contrast ratio. As we have known, OLED TV doesn’t use backlight. As their light source, each of their pixels can emit its own light. Excellently, each of pixels can switch on/off or dim individually without affected by the condition of other pixel surrounding.  Since they have self-lighting pixel, when displaying black, there is no light emitted from the black area at all. The result, black produced by them is nearly perfect. In a dark room, black produced even still looks inky. And of course, there are not LED TVS that can match their performance in producing black. So, in a dark room, OLED TVs are the champion.

Local Dimming Performance

Since they don’t have backlight, both of the LG OLED CX and C1 don’t have local dimming. But even so, as we have mentioned, they have self-lighting pixel that can switch on/off or dim individually, making them have pixel dimming level. This means, it is equivalent to local dimming on LED TV with the number of dimming zones is equal to the number of pixel. While the most number of dimming zones of LED TV is around 1000 or 2000 zones, it is similar to LED TV that has around 8 million of dimming zones. The result, when they are showing small highlight in dark scene, there is no visible blooming.  So this makes subtitle in movies or small highlight can be shown perfectly.

SDR Brightness

While they have excellent contrast ratio, their SDR peak brightness is not so bright. With real scene, they hit around 300 nits only. The LG C1 is even dimmer where it hits around 300 nits while the LG CX hits around 320 nits. With white windows test, they hit their brightest peak brightness at 2% and 10% white window where the OLED C1 hits a bit less than 400 nits while the OLED CX hits around 430 nits. Just like other OLED TVs, the larger of bright areas, its brightness is dimmed by their ABL (Auto Brightness Limiter). When the entire screen is bright, their ABL is even very aggressive to dim their scene. On 25%, 50% and 100% white window, the LG C1 hits around 360 nits, 300 nits and 130 nits while the LG CX hits around 395 nits, 325 nits, and 150 nits.

Separated from their difference, in general, their SDR peak brightness is only bright enough to fight the glare in moderately to dark room. Although they both have excellent reflection handling, but their SDR peak brightness is not bright enough to fight the glare in very bright room. So, if you want a brighter TV for a bright room, you should go on LED TV.

HDR Brightness

While SDR peak brightness of the LG C1 is not as bright as LG CX, its HDR peak brightness is also a bit dimmer than the predecessor. With real scene, the OLED CX is able to hit around 680 nits while the OLED C1 hits around 620 nits. And on white window test, the LG C1 hits its peak brightness at 2% and 10% window where it hits around 725 nits. On the other hand, the OLED CX hits its brightest peak brightness on 10% white window, which is around 770 nits. Meanwhile on 2% white window, it hits around 720 nits. Just like their SDR peak brightness, their peak brightness is dimmer as the bright area increases. On 25%, 50% and 100% white window, the OLED C1 hits around 390 nits, 260 nits, and 125 nits while the LG CX hits around 440 nits, 300 nits and 150 nits.

Their HDR peak brightness may not be so bright, but for OLED TVs, this is already very good. As long as they are not set in a very bright rooms, highlight of HDR images can still pop. But even so, this is still far from the 100 nits of the target. Meanwhile, although the LG CX can get brighter but their difference is not too significant.

Color Gamut and Color Volume

The LG C1 and CX have fantastic color gamut coverage, particularly in DCI P3. In DCI P3 xy, they can cover around 97% of color space while in DCI P3 uv, its coverage is around 99%. Their color gamut coverage is nearly perfect, making almost all colors of HDR images mastered in DCI P3 like HDR10 can be shown very accurate. In Rec.2020, their coverage is also good. In Rec.2020 xy their color gamut cover around 72% while in Rec.2020uv, they can cover around 77%. This means, although not perfect, their color gamut coverage in Rec.2020 is also wide enough to show HDR images mastered in Rec.2020 like Dolby Vision Content fairly accurate. However, although they both have nearly perfect coverage in DCI P3 and good coverage in Rec.2020 but they cannot map the colors very well. This makes some certain colors may be off the mark.

Wide color gamut

Meanwhile, although they both have fantastic color gamut coverage, they both only have decent color volume. They both may be able to produce deep darks shades of colors excellently. But even so, as we have known, to boost their brightness, OLED panel have additional white sub-pixel. So, if most LED panel have RGB sub pixel, the OLED panel has WRGB pixel structure. The use of white sub-pixel may make them can produce pure white, but on the other hand, this makes colors in higher luminance start to washed. They even cannot produce bright, saturated colors fairly well.  However, ignoring this shortcoming, overall, their color reproduction is great, better than most TVs in the market.

Color Gradient

Just like other models of OLED TVs, gradient of colors of HDR images displayed on their screen looks great. In the grays and greens, there may best still some little banding, but this should not be noticeable in real content. You need to know, they both have “Smooth Gradation” setting on their picture setting that can be used for removing banding. Set it to “Medium” or “High” will help to significantly remove banding. But on the other hand, this can cause some loss of fine details. Their color gradient looks great overall. Their color gradient is even better than most TVs, but still less worse than premium Sony’s TV.

Black and Gray Uniformity

Combination of infinite contrast ratio and pixel dimming level makes they have perfect black uniformity. When showing black scene with white cross line at the center, black area looks very uniform while white cross line at the center can be shown very well without blooming. Additionally, although not perfect, they both also have excellent gray uniformity. There may be still very little dirty screen effect, but the screen looks very uniform overall. In the darker screen, their uniformity is better. Of course, it is great for sports with large field like football or hockey.

Motion Handling

As we have known, OLED panel has a near instant pixel response time. This makes them can show fast moving images clearly and smoothly with almost no motion blur. Following fast moving objet, there is only a very short ghosting trail that should not be noticeable for most people. Blur that may be still visible is more due by persistence, that is, the way our eyes track movement. The near instant pixel response time may only result in a very short trail following fast moving object, which mean it’s great. But on the other hand, this will cause images appears to stutter, particularly when they are playing low frame rate content like 24p movies or 30 fps content. This is caused the frame is held on for longer. However, if you feel it bothers you, you can enable “OLED Motion” or “Motion Interpolation” features can help to solve this issue.

OLED Motion Pro

Both of the LG OLED CX and C1 may not have backlight. But they can still emulate the PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) dimming system of LED TVs, making them still have flickers. However, this should noticeable for most people. Meanwhile, to help motion looks smoother by inserting black frame into content at regular intervals that match to the frame rate of the content, they both have an optional BFI (Black Frame Insertion) mode called “OLED Motion”.  To enable this feature, first, you must set “Tru Motion” to “User Selection”. Then, set “OLED Motion” to “high” will make them flicker at 60 Hz while set it to “ Low” or “Medium” will make them flicker at 120 Hz. Set the flicker frequency should be matched to the frame rate of the content, because if not, this can cause some duplication.  Keep in mind, on the OLED CX, BFI mode only work properly in Game Mode. But even so, if you enable GSync, it is not available. On the other hand, on the LG C1, in addition in “Game Mode” it also works in ”Game Optimizer” mode. But even so, if the “Prevent Input Delay” set to “Boost” you cannot enable its BFI. Additionally, BFI mode also cannot be enabled in “PC” mode.

As we see on comparison table above, both of the LG OLED C1 and CX have native 120 Hz refresh rate panel, allowing them can play native 120 fps content or interpolate low frame rate content up to 120 Hz. Additionally, they both also support Variable Refresh Rate panel that compatible with some gaming features likes FreeSync, GSync, and HDMI Forum VRR.  There is a bit improvement offered by the LG C1 over its predecessor CX, which is on the range of their VRR technology. If VRR technology of the OLED CX is able to range between 40 Hz to 120 Hz at any resolution, the minimum range of VRR of the OLED C1 is extended to 20 Hz. But even so, it is only when using HDMI 2.1 while when using HDMI 2.0, the minimum range of their VRR frequency is still 40 Hz.

Inputs

The LG OLED C1 and CX both have 4 HDMI ports. Just like newest TVs in the markets, their HDMI ports support almost all features. All of their HDMI ports support HDMI 2.0 full bandwidth, CEC, HDCP 2.2, and also HDMI 2.1. But even so, special for the HDM 2.1, they don’t support full bandwidth. It only supports 40 Gbps of bandwidth instead 48 Gbps required for full bandwidth. But even so, it is still wide enough to cover content that has bandwidth beyond HDMI 2.0 like 4K @ 120 Hz content with 10 bit color. Additionally, their HDMI ports also already support most of resolution at any frame rate including 4K @ 120 Hz. They both also have HDMI ARC that also supports eARC, allowing them can pass high audio formats like Dolby Atmos via True-HD. But a bit unfortunately, they don’t support DTS:X via DTS-HD MA. For improving gaming experience, their HDMI ports also already support ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode), allowing them can automatically switch to “Game Mode” once there is a signal from game console via their HDMI port. They also can play any games a high bandwidth signal at almost all resolution from the new games consoles like PS5 or Xbox X series. But even so, with PS 5, they cannot play 1440p @120 Hz and in VRR mode.

They both also have 3 USB ports where all of them are USB 2.0. They both don’t have USB 3.0. But even so, the bandwidth of USB 3.0 is wide enough to cover any content when you play content from USB playback.  In addition HDMI and USB ports, they have 1 Digital Audio Out (optical), 1 Analog Audio Out (Mini Jack), 1 RF In, and 1 Ethernet port. A bit difference is on Composite In (AV IN) where the LG CX has this input while the LG C1 doesn’t have. To connect to the internet or other device wirelessly, they are equipped with built-in Wi-Fi 802.11ac and Bluetooth 5.0 version.

Meanwhile, coming with newer image processor, the LG OLED C1 offers a bit improvement on their input lags in Game Mode over the predecessor OLED CX. When coming with 60 fps content, the LG CX has around 14 ms of input lags and its input lags is relatively same at any resolution. With the same frame rate, the LG C1 has around 10 ms at any resolution. Meanwhile, when coming in 120 fps content, regardless the resolution, their input lags is lower than when with 60 fps content, which is around 7 ms for the LG CS and around 5 ms for the LG c1. With VRR enabled, the LG C1 has similar input lags to 120 Hz content, which is around 5 ms at any resolution. But even so, for the LG CX, its input lags vary depends on the resolution. At 1080p and 1440p resolution, its input lags are around 6 ms while at 4K resolution, its input lags is around 14 ms.  With these results, we all know that the OLED C1 is more responsive than the LG CX and this will be more pronounced for fast paced games that require fast reflexes. On the other hand, although not as low as LG C1, the input lags of the LG CX is actually already excellent, low enough to please most of gamers.

Smart TV Platform

WebOS 6.0 vs WebOS 5.0

The LG OLED C1 runs WebOS 6.0, the 2021 version of WebOS, while the LG CX runs 5.0 version. There is a change in their lineup brought by the 6.0 version. As we have known, if the home interface of the 5.0 version comes with ribbon of tiles, in version 6.0, it now has a smart hub switch with various apps and widgets. This makes its interface is more attractive than the previous version. Although it has more attractive interface but it is still responsive and easy to use. Meanwhile, except their interface, there is only a minor change offered by the newer version over the previous version. They both have great selection of apps where almost all major streaming apps like Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Prime, Disney+, and other are provided. It even support HDR in Netflix and YouTube, allowing you to enjoy HDR content via Netflix or YouTube App. Additionally, there are also a lot of Live TVs, games, web Browser, and other useful apps. Still not satisfied with the preinstalled-app available? They have a app store called “LG‘s app store that have great selection of apps. They also support Apple TV Plus and Disney+. Additionally, WebOS also already supports Voice Navigation. In addition LG ThinQ AI as its own voice navigation platform, they both also already support built-in Alexa and Google Assistant. Overall, the WebOS is great smart TV that offers easy navigation and smoothness.

Remote

LG Magic Remote 2020 vs 2021

As their main controller, both of them come with LG’s magic remote. But even so, for this case, the LG OLED C1 comes with newly redesigned LG’s magic remote. It is simmer than the previous model, but still brings some main features found on the older model like scroll wheel and motion-controller pointer. Additionally, they both also have built-in microphone, allowing you to make voice command and they have many features of voice control like changing inputs, ask for weather, changes volume, search for content, etc. That is not only that, they both can also act as universal remote, allowing you to control other devices with these remotes. Meanwhile, the newer LG’s magic remote now has NFC-enable feature, allowing you to tap your phone against the remote to quickly mirror cast content to the TV and vice versa. Additionally, the newer remote also has more app shortcut buttons. If the remote of the LG CX only have two quick access buttons for Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, the 2021’s model has six quick access buttons for Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney +, Google Assistant, etc.

Sound Performance

Both of the LG OLED C1 and CX have the same number of speaker channel, which are 2.2 channels. They also have the same total of sound output, which is 40 watts. Their speaker can get fairly loud, which is around 91 dB SPL, loud enough for crowded room or wide room. Additionally, overall, their sound profile is also equally well-balanced, allowing them can produce clear dialogue. Nevertheless, the sound produced by the LG CX has better frequency response than the sound produced by LG C1. At middle level volume or max volume, deviation in the frequency response of the sound produced by OLED CX is better. Additionally, the LG CX also has better low-frequency extension, allowing it can produce more bass than the LG C1. But even so, they cannot produce any thump or rumble in their bass. While the LG CX has better frequency response and more bass, their distortion performance is almost similar. Moderate volume or 80 dB, there is not so much audible distortion, which means it is good. But unfortunately, at max volume, the distortion gets worse quickly. Fortunately, there are not many people that can hear it, so this should not be a serious issue.

Image Processor

As we see on comparison table above, as their image processor, the LG OLED C1 is powered by Alpha 9 Gen 4 processor while the OLED CX is powered by Alpha 9 Gen 3 Processor. There are no details that explain the improvements offered by the newer processor. But LG just says that the newer image processor can perform better then the predecessor Gen 3, particularly in up-scaling of non 4K content. In a sense, this has an impact on the picture quality produced, particularly if the source has lower resolution than 4K. Additionally, since they both have Dolby Vision IQ , this also has an effect on the performance of the Dolby Vision IQ where expected, the LG C1 can produce more accurate Dolby Vision Images in any room’s light condition. As we have known, Dolby Vision IQ is not HDR format like HDR10+ over HDR10. But it is a feature that maximizes your experience in watching Dolby Vision in any room’s light condition. Without Dolby Vision, you will see one kind of Dolby Vision content with constant brightness level. Meanwhile, Dolby Vision IQ allows you to see Dolby Vision images with brightness level that varies to suit the light condition of your room.

Game Optimizer

Game Optimizer

 

Game Optimizer is a new feature that only featured by the LG’s 2021 TV lineup including LG C1. This means, the LG CX doesn’t have this feature. It is an app suite that puts gaming-related settings in a single, easy-to-access drawer. It allows you can make a setting easily. With this features, you can change toggle between FreeSync and GSync easily and quickly without entering picture menu. Additionally, it also has some options to improve input lag and motion, black and white stabilizer, several genre-specific picture presets, etc. In general, this feature makes you easier in making setting when playing games.

LG OLED C1 vs CX Performance

For Watching Movies

Both of the LG OLED C1 and CX are fantastic TV for watching movies in a dark room. As we have discussed a lot above, they have infinite native contrast ratio, allowing them can produce nearly perfect black. So, even though you set them in a pitch dark room, black produced by them will look remain really black. Additionally, combination of their perfect black uniformity and pixel dimming level makes dark scene displayed on their screen looks excellent. Small bright object can be shown well without blooming, which mean good for subtitles. Additionally, they are also able to up-scale non 4K movies fairly well, allowing you to enjoy them in 4K quality with detail still preserved well. That is not only that, they both can do a great job in handling 24p judder, so this allows you to watch movies with judder-free. They also have good motion handling, making fast action movies looks very smooth on their screen. But a bit shorting of them is that their near instant pixel response time make motion appear to stutter particularly when they are playing low frame rate content. And since most movies has 24p fps of frame rate, you need to enable their motion interpolate to remove screen stuttering. Additionally, they both may have built-in 2.2 speaker system with 2 sub woofer. But even so, you will not hear steady thump and rumble when watching action or war movies since their speaker cannot well produce thump and rumble.

For Watching TV Shows

As long as you don’t use it for watching TV Shows in a very bright room, their performance is great. They both have may have excellent reflection handling, but their SDR peak brightness is not so bright. So, in a very bright, their peak brightness struggles to fight the glare. But even so, in moderate or dim room, they have great performance. Their great performance in up-scaling non 4K content allowing you to watch TV shows in 4K quality with small details are preserved wells. Their good viewing angle is good for you who often watch TV together with your family. And since their speaker system has well-balanced sound profile, this allows you to watch TV shows with clear dialogue.

For Watching Sports

As we have known, both of the LG OLED CX and C1 have near instant pixel response time. Combine to their BFI feature, this allows them can produce clear and smooth motion with almost judder free. And since most sports have fast moving scenes, of course, this allows you to watch fast sports with smooth and clear picture quality. Additionally, their gray uniformity is also equally great. This is good for sport that have large field like football or hockey where you can watch them without a lot of dirty screen effect. That is not only that, their wide side viewing is also good for you who often watch a big game with your friend or family. So, even though you sit on the edge of your wide seat, you will get the best viewing. A bit shortcoming is them is that their SDR peak brightness is not too bright, so when you watch sports in a very bright room, the picture produced may be distracted by the glare. Fortunately, they have good reflection handling, so this issue can be minimized.

Video Games

As we have discussed a lot above, in term of picture quality and motion handling, their performance is almost similar. If there is a difference, this is more due to panel variance. Their wide color gamut, infinite contrast, good color gradient, etc makes the picture of games can be shown excellent on their screen. Additionally, their good motion handling also makes games looks very smooth on their screen. They both also already support VRR technology that compatible with some Gaming Features like HGiG, FreeSync, GSync, and HDMI Forum VRR, allowing you to play games without screen tearing effect. And since they have HDMI 2.1, both of them can play game in high picture quality like 4K @ 120 Hz that supported by new games consoles like PS 5 or C Box X series.  Until here, their performance may be similar. Whoever, coming with newer version of images processor, the LG C1 has lower input lags than the predecessor, making it is a bit more responsive than the predecessor. The new feature called “Game Optimizer” also allows you easier to make setting when playing games.

HDR Performance

HDR performance of the LG C1 and LG CX is also equally great, particularly in dark scene section. Combination of infinite contrast ratio, pixel dimming level and perfect black uniformity makes them can show excellent shadow details of HDR images without crushed black. As we have discussed above, In DCI P3 color space, their color coverage is nearly perfect, allowing them can show almost all colors of HDR images that mastered in DCI P3 very accurately. Although not as perfect as DCI P3, their color gamut coverage in Rec.2020 is also still wide enough to show most colors of HDR Images mastered in Rec.2020 like Dolby Vision fairly accurate. Although not as good as Sony’s premium TV, they both also have great gradient handling, allowing you to watch HDR content with very smooth color gradient. Additionally, for OLED TV, their HDR peak brightness is also fairly good. As long as not in a bright colors, their HDR peak brightness still bright enough to bring out highlight in HDR. But of course, it is still far from the target of 1000 nits intended by the content creator.

Winner: LG CX has brighter HDR brightness while the LG C1 has better color reproduction

Conclusion

As long as they are not used in a very bright room with sunny window or direct light, both of the LG OLED C1 and CX are great TVs for mixed usage. Whether they are used for watching movies, TV shows, Sports, HDR content or playing games, their performance is far above average.  All most all aspects of picture quality and features offered by them are great. But of course, there are not perfect TVs. Although in general, their performance great, they still have some shortcoming like limited peak brightness in both SDR and HDR, screen stuttering when show low frame rate content, and has a risk to permanent burning when showing static images for a long time. Meanwhile, as a newer model, the LG C1 doesn’t bring significant improvement over the predecessor or with other words, their picture quality is almost similar. But even so, outside the aspects of picture quality, as a newer model, the LG C1 still brings some improvements and offers new features like Game Optimizer, lower input lags, etc. So, which is a better choice between them? Decision is certainly comes to you according to your own preference and budget. Keep in mind, as newer model, the LG OLED C1 is sold more expensive. But even so, this is more caused that the price of LG OLED CX has dropped since its presence in the market has been replaced by the LG C1.
