LG C2 vs C1 OLED TV Comparison

The LG C1 OLED is one of the most favorite TVs in 2021. Although it is a 2021 model, but it is still on sale and will remain cheaper than its replacement for as long as supplies last. This is due its price has dropped a lot. On the other hand, the LG C2 OLED is the successor and it is just starting to become available to replace the LG C1. And of course, the LG C2 has more expensive price since its price is not dropped a lot. One of the interesting things is that the C2 is available on 42 inches. It is the first smallest commercial OLED TVs has been released. Except 42 inches, the LG C2 comes in screen sizes variants that also found on LG C1, which are 48 inches (OLED48C2PUA vs OLED48C1PUB), 55 inches (OLED55C2PUA vs OLED55C1PUB), 65 inches (OLED65C2PUA vs OLED65C1PUB), 77 inches (OLED77C2PUA vs OLED77C1PUB), and 83 inches (OLED83C2PUA vs OLED83C1PUA).

As the newer model, we certainly hope that there are some improvements and new features that offered by the LG C2.  One of the main improvements that brought by the OLED C2 over the predecessor is that it now already has LG’s evo panel. This technology is actually first introduced in last year. However, there is only LG G1 that already have this panel technology while the LG C1 doesn’t have. You need to know; it is the technology that developed to improve brightness of OLED panel. And the good news is that the LG C2 already has this OLED panel technology. Dark Room Performance

Performance of the LG C2 and C1 in a dark room is very fantastic. This is a one of the strong aspects of All OLED TVs. And this is very useful when you want to watch movies with cinematic experience. As we have known, All OLED TVs have infinite contrast ratio, nearly perfect black uniformity, and pixel dimming level. This makes dark scene looks very sharp and details without “crushed black”, even if they are set in a dark room. When showing small black area in bright scene, black scene still looks inky although the surrounding is bright. There is no LED TVs that can match performance of OLED TVS including LG C2 or LG C1 in a dark room.

Bright Room Performance

The use of evo panel makes the LG G2 can get a lot of brighter than the LG C1. With real scene, the OLED C2 can get around 425 nits while the OLED C1 hits around 300 nits only. This means, in bright room, the LG C2 can handle the glare better than the LG C1. But unfortunately, just like other OLED TVs, their ABL (Automatic Brightness Limiter) is aggressive, so although they can show small bright area fairly bright, but they still struggle with large bright area. In most contents, this may be not too noticeable, but it is distracting when showing content with large bright area like hockey, baseball, etc. The other good point is that they have outstanding reflection handling. The intensity of direct reflection can be significantly reduced by their glossy finish.

Meanwhile, when coming with HDR content, the LG OLED C2 also have a lot of brighter HDR peak brightness than LG C1. With real scene, the OLED C2 is able to hits around 800 nits while the LG C1 hits around 625 nits. Small highlight even can be shown extremely bright, which is around 725 nits for the LG C1 and around 800 nits for the LG C2. Although not as bright as premium LED TVs like Samsung QN90A or QN90B, but it is still bright enough to show highlight of HDR images as bright they should in HDR.

Picture Quality

The LG C2 and C1 have outstanding picture quality. You need to know, as their images processor, the LG C2 is powered by Alpha 9 Gen 5 while the LG C1 is powered by Alpha 9 Gen 4. They both have been embedded AI Based Up-scaling engine that allows them can show non 4K content in 4K resolution nearly as good as native 4K content. This means, whether the source has 480p, 720p, 1080p resolution, all of them can be shown on their screen with small details are still preserved well. That is not only that, both of them also have good gray uniformity, making them can show large area with uniform color without dirty screen effect. Additionally, the other strong point that offered by them is about their excellent viewing angle coverage. So, although you watch TV from the side, the picture displayed on their screen will look remain accurate, as accurate as when viewed from the center and front.

Color Reproduction

Both of the LG C1 and C2 have outstanding color gamut. Their color gamut coverage in DCI P3 is nearly perfect where they can cover nearly 100% of both DCI P3 xy and uv color Space. The result is that almost all colors of HDR images mastered in DCI P3 certainly can be shown accurately on their screen. Additionally, although not as perfect as in DCI P3, their color coverage in Rec.2020 is also good. In Rec.2020 xy, the LG C2 can cover around 73% while the LG C1 covers around 71%. Meanwhile, In Rec.2020 uv, the LG C2 can cover around 80% while the LG C1 cover around 76% of color space. Unfortunately, although they have a wide range of color gamut but they cannot map them very well, especially for saturated greens. This certainly makes some colors may be off the mark of the expected colors. In addition to their color mapping may be not so good, their color volume is also only decent, especially when displaying bright colors. Their infinite contrast ratio may make them are able to produce deep dark colors excellently, but at higher luminance, colors may look wash out. This is caused by the use of white subpixel. You need to know, the use of white sub-pixel may make them can produce pure white, but on the other hand, this will de-saturate bright colors. So, colors cannot be shown as bright as pure white.

The other good point is they have smooth color gradient. Since both support 10-bit colors, they can produce around 1 million shades of colors. The result, color gradient of images displayed on their screen looks very smooth overall. There may be some small banding in the gray and greens, but this should not be noticeable in regular content. But even so, if you still feel disturbed by banding, you can enable “Smooth Gradation” to reduce them. But keep in mind, this can cause some loss of fine details, especially with high-quality content.

Meanwhile, compare among them, the LG C2 can produce a bit wider of color gamut while the LG C1 has better color gradient. But in general, their color reproduction is equally great.

Motion Handling

One of the major advantages of OLED TVs including the LG C1 and C2 than LED TVS is that they have nearly instant pixel response time. This makes fast moving images looks very clear and smooth with almost no noticeable blur. Following fast moving objects, there is only very short faint blur that should not be noticeable. However, there is still noticeable persistence blur that caused by sample and hold nature of OLED technology.  Additionally, near instant response time may makes fast motion images looks smooth but on the other hand, this can cause low frame rate content like 24p movies appears to stutter due to each fame is hold on for longer. Fortunately, this issue can be solved by enabling motion interpolation. That is not only that, both of them can also show 24p movies with judder-free, regardless the source of movies.

As we have known, although they have nearly instant response time but this cannot still remove persistence blur. However, they both have BFI (Black Frame Insertion) features that can improve their motion appearance by reducing persistence blur. You need to know, by default, since OLED TV use different system to LED TV in dimming their screen, OLED TV doesn’t use PWM. So, their screen is almost flicker-free that means it is good. But even so, flicker that is match to frame rate of content is required to reduce persistence blur. And for this case, they have BFI (Black Frame Insertion) mode called TruMotion. The LG C1 can flicker at 60 Hz or 120 Hz that means it is good. On the other hand, for the LG C2, LG has removed 120 Hz flicker that was available on LG C1. With other words, the LG C2 doesn’t have 120 Hz flicker features. This certainly is unfortunate considering the increasing number of 120 fps content.

By default, both of the LG C2 and C1 have native 120 Hz refresh rate panel. But even so, they also already support VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) technology. No matter the resolution, their Refresh Rate is able to range between 20 Hz to 120 Hz. Additionally, their VRR technology is also compatible with some gaming features like FreeSync, GSync, and HDMI Forum VRR. As we have known, VRR technology can help improve gaming experience by reducing screen tearing effect.

Inputs

As their major connectivity, the LG OLED C2 and C1 have 4 HDMI ports. All of their HDMI ports support HDMI 2.0 full bandwidth, HDMI 2.1 class bandwidth, HDCP 2.2, CEC, etc. Additionally, one of them also supports ARC that also support eARC, allowing them can play or pass high quality audio format. A bit improvement that is offered by the LG C1 is about the ability of its HDMI 2.1 where LG C2 now already supports 48 Gbps of bandwidth while the LG C1 supports as highest possible 40 Gbps only. Additionally, their HDMI ports also already support most resolution including 4K @ 120 Hz thanks to HDMI 2.1 support. This certainly is great for you who have modern game console or PC.

Meanwhile, talking about their input lags in Game Mode, both of the LG C1 and C2 have excellent input lags. WebOS 6.0 vs WebOS 22

As their smart TV platform, both of the LG C2 OLED and C1 OLED run WebOS, the smart TV platform that specially developed for LG TVs.  In 2021, WebOS has reached version 6.0. where it is used by LG’s 2021 lineup including LG C1. Meanwhile, in 2022, LG has changed the numbering of version where it now is advertised by version 22 although in its “Information Page”, it is still reported as version 7.1.0. Although there is a change in the version numbering, but there is not massive departure from WebOS 6.0.  Nevertheless, the version22 still offers some refinements including NFC magic Tap for mirroring mobile devices to your LG TVs and “Always Ready” mode that displays art or photos when the TV is not in use.

Additionally, both also come with built-in support for Google Assistant and Alexa. Both of them also come with Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, and Apple TV with full support for 4K. Additionally, LG C2 and C1 come with LG’s magic remote as their controller and there is no much difference between 2021 and 2022 model. As we have known, LG magic Remote has a lot of useful features like built-in microphone for voice navigation, point and click feature, clickable scroll wheel, etc. LG remote also can act as universal remote to control other devices connected on LG TVs, even if they don’t support HDMI CEC.

Movies

One of the superiorities of OLED TVS including LG C1 and C2 is when they are used for watching movies in a dark room. As we have discussed a lot above, their infinite contrast ratio, perfect black uniformity, and pixel dimming level makes their dark room performance is fantastic. Additionally, although their nearly instantaneous response time cause 24p movies appear to stutter, but since they have motion interpolation feature, you can solve this issue by interpolating them to 60 Hz or 120 Hz. Both of them are also able to show 24p movies with judder-free, no matter the source of movies. HDR movies also looks excellent on their screen due to their great HDR performance.

Sports

The LG C1 and C2 are also great TVs when used for watching sports. They have good SDR peak brightness, so there will be no issue with a glare when you use them for watching sports in a bright room. Additionally, their motion handling is also great. Combination of their instant pixel response time and 60 Hz BFI mode allows you to watch fast sports smoothly. As we known, most sports have frame rate of 60 Hz. When they are showing sports with large bright scenes like hockey or baseball, the picture displayed looks very clear with almost no dirty screen effect thanks to their good gray uniformity. And since they have good side viewing angle coverage, you don’t need to worry when you watching a big game with a group of your friend or family who sit together on the wide seating. All of you will get the best viewing, even for you who seat on the side.

Games

When used for gaming, their performance is also equally great. In addition to have excellent picture quality and motion handling that allows you to play any games with excellent and smooth picture quality, they also have low input lags. This certainly makes any games feel responsively. Your action will be in-sync with what you see on their screen when playing games. But as we have discussed above, with 60 games or VRR enable, the LG C1 is more responsive than the LG C2 due to its lower input lags.

Meanwhile, for improving your gaming experience, both of them also already supports some advanced gaming features. Their HDMI ports support ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode), making them can automatically switch to game mode once the signal from game console is detected. Additionally, they both also already support VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) that allows you to play any games with no screen tearing effect. That is good is that their VRR is compatible with FreeSync that identical with XBOX One or Ati Radeon Graphic Card, GSync that is identical with Nvidia Graphic Card, or HDMI Forum. HDR Performance

The LG C1 and C2 have great HDR performance, especially in dark side. Combination of their infinite contrast ratio, nearly perfect black uniformity, and pixel dimming level allows to them to show shadows details of HDR images looks excellent without a lot of “crushed black”. In the color reproduction, they both also great since they have wide range of color gamut and smooth color gradient. A bit drawback is that they cannot show very bright colors as bright as pure white. Additionally, their color mapping is not also too accurate, so there is still a bit color deviation between signal and color on the screen. Meanwhile, although not as bright as LED TVs, the LG C2 and C1 also have good HDR peak brightness. Special for the LG C2, with evo Panel, it even can get a lot of brighter than the LG C1. With around 600 nits for the LG C1 and around 800 nits for the LG C2, both may be not able to present cinematic HDR experience due to its HDR peak brightness is still below 1000 nits. But this actually is bright enough to make highlight of HDR images pop.

Meanwhile, both of them supports most of HDR formats like HDR10, HLG, and Dolby Vision. They both even have a feature called “Dolby Vision IQ” that will improve their Dolby Vision Experience. But unfortunately, they don’t support HDR10+, the other HDR formats that use dynamic metadata like Dolby Vison.

Conclusion

One of the major improvements offered by the LG C2 over the predecessor LG C1 is about evo Panel. As we have discussed above, the LG C2 already use evo panel while the LG C1 is not yet. And like the expectation, the LG C2 can get brighter than the LG C1, making it can handle the glare better when set in a bright room or can show highlight of HDR image brighter. Additionally, the LG C2 also comes with newer generation of Alpha 9 images processor, which is gen 5 while the LG C1 is powered by Alpha 9 Gen 4. But even so, there is no significant impact offered by the newer generation of Alpha 9 over the previous version. LG also a bit improves the bandwidth support of HDMI 2.1 ports of the LG C2 where the OLED C2 now supports up to 48 Gbps of bandwidth while the LG C1 supports up to 40 Gbps of bandwidth.

So, which is a better choice between them? As we have discussed above, with all improvements offered by the LG C2 over the C1, the LG C2 OLED is sold more expensive than the LG C1 OLED. This actually is more caused that the price of the LG C1 has been dropped a lot. With picture quality and performance that offered, the LG C1 actually is still worth to buy, moreover its price is cheaper. On the other hand, LG C2 OLED TV certainly is better choice since it is a newer model and have some improvements. Although to get it, you must spend extra budget than if you buy LG C1 OLED. Now, the decision certainly comes back to you according to your own preference.
