LG A2 vs B2 OLED TV Review

LG A2 and B2 are the entry level of LG’s 2022 OLED TV lineup. The LG B2 OLED TV are the successor of the LG B1 while the LG A2 is the successor of the LG A1. In LG’s 2022 OLED TV lineup, the LG B2 sits between the C2 and A2 while the A2 sits below the B2 and also the lowest-end model. Both of them are the best alternative for you who want the fantastic picture quality of OLED TVs but objected with the price that offered for most OLED TVs. Compared to the higher model like LG C2 or G2, they lack some features like evo-OLED technology, etc. Additionally, they are also powered by the lower level of image processor than the LG C2 or G2, which is Alpha 7 Gen 5. Nevertheless, about picture quality, both are not far behind the higher model.

Powered by the same image processor and use the same OLED panel technology, picture quality of the LG B2 and A2 may be not much different. But as the entry level model, the LG A2 also lacks some features found on LG B2 OLED, especially for features that can improve gaming performance like HDMI 2.1 and VRR technology. That is not only that, the LG A2 also comes with native 60 Hz refresh rate only while the LG B2 comes with native 120 Hz refresh rate panel.

Meanwhile, in the market, the LG B2 comes with 3 screen sizes variant including 55 inches (OLED55B2PUA), 65 inches (OLED65B2PUA), and 77 inches (OLED77B2PUA). Dark Room Performance

As typical of OLED TVs, in a dark room, performance of the LG A2 and B2 is really great and this is undoubtedly. As we have known, each pixel of OLED panel can emit its own light individually, which means, each of its pixel can switch on/off or dim individually without affected be the condition of other pixel nearby. So, it doesn’t use backlight. When it is displaying black, the pixels in the black area don’t emit light at all. As the result, black produced by them is nearly perfect. And wherever the location of black, black is shown with the same level. This certainly makes its black uniformity is nearly perfect. Additionally, its individually self-light pixel also makes OLED panel has pixel dimming level. So, when they are displaying small highlight, pixels in highlight area will be switched on while the pixels near it are switched off. As the result, highlight can be shown excellently without blooming and haloing effect.

And their nearly perfect black level, pixel dimming level, and nearly perfect uniformity makes their performance in a dark room is really great. Black displayed on their screen still look really black in a dark room. And indirectly, this makes dark colors can also be shown accurately. And as the result, both can show dark scene excellently and accurately without “black crush”, even if they set in a dark room.

Bright Room Performance

While their performance is outstanding in a dark room, in a bright room, its performance is not very good, especially for the LG A2. With SDR real scene, the OLED A2 hits about 300 nits only, while the B2 can get slightly brighter, which is about 380 nits. With white window test, both can get slightly brighter. But its peak brightness varies depending on the content where the bright area increase, their peak brightness will be dimmer by their ABL (Automatic Brightness limiter). The LG A2 geta their brightest peak brightness at 2% and 10 % white window test where it get about 360 nits. While it get its lowest peak brightness is when it is displaying throughout the screen is bright, which is about 160 nits. On the other hand, the LG B2 gets its brightest peak brightness is also on 2% and 10% white window, which is about 460 nits. And just like the A2, it gets its lowest peak brightness when showing the entire screen is bright, which is about 190 nits.

With peak brightness reached by them, this is only bright enough to fight the glare in a room with a few small light sources like a lamp.  Fortunately, both have great reflection handling. At least, this can help further improve their performance in a bright room. Meanwhile, since the B2 can get a bit brighter and has a bit reflection handling, in a brighter room, its performance is a bit better than the LG A2.

Picture Clarity

Although both are powered by Alpha 7 Gen 5 AI Processor 4K, the lower-level processor of Alpha 9 found on LG C2 and G2, but the clarity of images displayed on their screen is not far behind the C2 or G2. Their processor also have AI-based Up-scaling engine and deep learning machine that let them can up-scale lower resolution to 4K excellently. So, even you play Blu Ray movies that usually has 1080p resolution, or movies from TV cable that usually has 720p or even DVD movies that usually has 480p resolution, all of them can displayed on their screen in 4K resolution with a lot of fine details. The higher resolution of the source, 4K images displayed on their screen looks finer with more small details preserved well. And when the source is native 4K signal, both of the LG A2 and B2 can display them without any issue.

Additionally, both of them also have great gray uniformity. This is very important when they are showing images with large area that has uniform colors where they are found a lot in sports like field in hockey, baseball, etc. As the result, they are can be shown excellently and looks very uniform without a lot of dirty screen effect.

Side Viewing Angle

As typical of OLED TVs, both of the LG A2 and B2 have wide viewing angle coverage. From the side, Black level of images looks very consistent and as deep as when viewed from the center and front. That is not only that, brightness level of images is also very consistent, so even if you watch TV from the side, it looks as bright as when viewed from the front and side. But a bit unfortunately, started at certain angle, which is about 40 degreed off center and front, color of images will shift. However, chroma of color can still be maintain up to 70 degrees off center, so from the side, color of images still looks accurate. This certainly makes them are very suitable for you who have a wide room with wide seating arrangement for watching TV.

Color Reproduction

Just like other LED TVs, both of the LG B2 and A2 have incredible color gamut. Their coverage in DCI P3 color space is nearly perfect where they can cover about 97% of DCI P3 xy color space and about 99% of DCI P3 color space. This is certainly is great for most current HDR that mastered in DCI P3 color space like HDR10 content. Additionally, for next-gen HDR formats that mastered in Rec.2020 like Dolby Vision, its color coverage is also good, which is about 72% of Rec.2020 xy and about 78% of Rec.2020 uv color space. Although its color coverage in Rec.2020 is not as wide as QD-OLED TV, but they are still future-proof.

But unfortunately, they cannot produce bright colors as bright as QD-OLED TV. This is caused the use of white-subpixel makes them cannot produce bright saturated color. But overall, their color volume is good. Besides they cannot produce very bright colors, their color volume is only limited by their incomplete color gamut. This means, except very bright colors and the colors outside their color gamut, both can show their wide color gamut at their entire brightness range.

While they have excellent color gamut and good color volume that makes HDR images looks colorful and life-like on their screen, their color gradient is only decent. The use of Alpha 7 Gen 5 makes its gradient handling is not as great as the higher model likes LG C2 or G2 that use Alpha 9 Gen 5. With real content, there are still some noticeable bandings in all colors. Both actually have a feature called “Smooth Gradation” that can help reduce banding. But this only works well with low quality content while for high quality content, this precisely can cause some lose of fine details.

Motion Handling

The other advantage of OLED TV is about their nearly instantaneous pixel response time. Their pixel response time is about 2.4 ms, much lower than the lowest response time of LED TVs. The result, when they are showing fast moving images, there is almost no motion blur. Following fast moving object, there is only a very short ghosting trail that should not be noticeable. However, the instantaneous response time actually also create its own issue, which are persistence blur due to the sample-and-hold method of OLED panel and low frame rate content like movies appear to stutter due each-frame is held on longer. Fortunately, special for the B2 OLED, persistence blur issue can be solved by enabling its optional BFI (Black Frame Insertion) mode while images stuttering issue can be reduced by interpolating them to higher frame rate or enable its BFI mode.

 

Since they don’t have backlight, to dim their screen, OLED TV doesn’t use PWM Dimming system found on LED TV with local dimming feature. The result, their screen is almost flicker-free, which is great. However, as we have discussed above, in certain scene, screen flickering or BFI is required to reducing image stuttering and further improve their motion appearance by reducing persistence blur. And for this purpose, the LG B2 has an optional BFI mode that can make their screen flicker at 60 Hz or 120 Hz, depending on the frame rate of content. But unfortunately, the B2 can only flicker at 60 Hz, even if it is playing 120 Hz content. This is a bit disappointing especially if it is playing 120 fps content and need BFI. On the other hand, the LG A2 doesn’t even have BFI feature.

The other advantage of the LG B2 than LG A2 is their native refresh rate panel. As we see on comparison table above, the LG A2 has native 60 Hz refresh rate panel while the LG B2 has 120 Hz refresh rate panel. This makes the B2 OLED can properly display any content with frame rate up to 120 Hz while the A2 can only properly display content with frame rate up to 60 Hz. That is not only that, the LG B2 also supports VRR technology that is compatible with all of the common VRR formats including HDMI Forum VRR, GSync, and FreeSync. Additionally, its VRR technology also works with wide range of their refresh rate, which is lower than 20 Hz to 120 Hz. That is not only that, it also supports LFC (Low Frame Rate Compensation). This will be enabled if the framerate drops to below 40 Hz in order to you still won’s see screen tearing. As we have known, VRR technology help improve its gaming performance by reducing screen tearing. On the other hand, the LG A2 doesn’t support VRR.

Inputs

As their main connectivity, the LG B2 has 4 HDMI ports while the LG A2 has 3 HDMI ports only. Additionally, both also have 2 USB ports, and 1 Digital Audio Out (optical). Meanwhile, to connect on the internet, both give you two options, via ethernet cable or wirelessly via Wi-Fi.  Additionally, both also have built-in Bluetooth allowing you to connect your LG TV to your audio system via Bluetooth connection.

Meanwhile, discussing about the ability of their HDMI ports, the LG B2 is better than the LG A2. In addition to have more number of HDMI ports, the HDMI ports of the LG B2 also already support HDMI 2.1 while the LG A2 lacks HDMI 2.1. However, in case of the LG A2 have HDMI 2.1, this is also useless since it only has native 60 Hz refresh Rate panel because the bandwidth of HDMI 2.0 is more than enough to cover a content with frame rate as high as possible 60 Hz. You need to know, like the LG B2, HDMI ports of the A2 also supports HDMI 2.0. Additionally, all of their HDMI ports also support CEC, HDCP 2.2, and ALLM. Both also have HDMI ARC (HDMI 3) that also supports eARC, allowing them can pass high-quality audio formats to a compatible soundbar or AV Receiver.

Meanwhile, talking about their input lag in Game Mode, their input lag is equally great, with 60 fps games, no matter the resolution, their input lag is about 11 ms. This of course is low enough to play game responsively without delay, even for fast paced games that required fast reflects. Meanwhile since the LG A2 doesn’t support 120 fps games, this only applies for LG B2. So, no matter the resolution, input lag the LG B2 with 120 fps games is even faster, which is about 6 ms, which is great.

LG A2 vs B2 OLED TV Performance

Movies

As typical of OLED TV, both of the LG B2 and A2 are great TVs for watching movies in a dark room. Both have incredible dark room performance, so even if you watch movies that have a lot of dark scenes in a dark room, the images displayed on their screen will looks excellent. That is not only that, thanks to their nearly instantaneous pixel response time, fast action movies also looks very smooth on their screen. Both of the LG A2 and G2 also has great up-scaling engine and deep learning machine that ensure low resolution movies like DVD movies or movies from TV cable can be shown in 4K resolution with small details are preserved well.

Meanwhile, compare between them, the LG B2 I a bit better than the A2. As we have discussed above, the LG B2 has an optional BFI mode that can further improve its motion appearance by reducing persistence blur while the LG A2 doesn’t have this feature. This makes fast action movies looks smoother on its screen than on the screen of the LG A2. That is not only that, enabling this feature can also help to reduce image stuttering when it is showing movies. The other advantage of the LG B2 than A2 OLED is about its performance in handling judder. No matter the source, you can watch movies with judder-free on the screen of LG B2. On the other hand, the LG A2 OLED can remove judder only if the source is native 24p movies like DVD or Blu Ray movies. While when the source is 24p via 60i signal or 24p movies via 60p signal, it cannot remove judder completely. This means, if you watch movies from PC or Satellite TV, you will see judder on the screen of the LG OLED A2.

Sports

 When used for watching sports, both have the LG B2 and A2 also have great performance. Their nearly instantaneous response time makes fast sports like F1 or Superbike looks very smooth and clear on their screen. Additionally, they also have good gray uniformity. So, when they are playing large area with uniform color like field in sports in sports, it looks very uniform without a lot of dirty screen effect. And the other great points is that they have wide viewing angle, which is great for you who often watch a big game with a group of your family. As long as they are not used in a very bright room with a lot of bright sources, their peak brightness is bright enough to fight the glare, allowing you to watch sports in most bright rooms without distracted by the glare. Overall, both are great TVs for watching Sports.
However, compare between them, the LG B2 is bit better than the LG A2. As we have discussed above, SDR peak brightness of the LG B2 is a bit brighter, So, in a brighter room, the LG B2 is better in overcoming the glare than the A2 OLED. Additionally, the LG B2 also has an optional 60 Hz BFI mode that can improve motion appearance of sports that also usually has 60 Hz of frame rate.

Video Games

As we have discussed above, compare the higher series like LG B2, C2, or G2, the LG A2 lacks some features that can improve its gaming performance like HDMI 2.1, VRR technology, and native 120 Hz refresh rate panel. This certainly makes it is not a good as the LG B2 when used for playing games. They may have the same picture quality, so images of games will look excellent on their screen. Additionally, the images of fast paced games also looks very clear and smooth on their screen thanks to their great motion handling. Both also have low input lags that allows you to play any games responsively without delay.

But lacks of some features we have mentioned above makes performance of the LG A2 is not as good as the B2 OLED. Lacks of HDMI 2.1 and native 120 Hz refresh rate panel makes the LG A2 doesn’t support high quality games like 4K @ 120 Hz supported by modern game console like PS5 or X Box X Series. With native 60 Hz refresh rate panel, the LG A2 can only properly show 60 fps games. Additionally, lacks of VRR technology also makes the LG A2 cannot remove screen tearing effect that may be appear when you play game. On the other hand, the LG B2 has all of these features that allows you to get better experience when playing games.

HDR Performance

Thanks to their infinite contrast ratio, pixel dimming level, and nearly perfect black uniformity, both of the LG B2 and A2 can do an exceptional job when showing shadow details of HDR images. Dark scenes of HDR images looks excellently with a lot of fine details and no “black crush”. Additionally, bright object in a dark scene can also be shown excellently without blooming around it. Essentially, both can show dark scene of HDR Images like what expected from HDR.

Additionally, both of the LG A2 and B2 also have wide color gamut. Their coverage in DCI P3 color space is nearly perfect, which is great for most current HDR contents that mastered in this color space like HDR10 content. Their color coverage in Rec.2020 may be not as wide as QD-OLED TV, but their color coverage is still wide enough to show most colors of HDR images that mastered in Rec.2020. And with more and more HDR content that mastered in Rec.2020 being released, you don’t to worry about it.

But a bit unfortunately, both cannot produce very bright colors. So, very bright object may be not able to be shown accurately. Additionally, their color gradient is also not as smooth as the LG C2 or G2. So, when you watch HDR images, you may notice some few bandings in certain colors. However, it is not very bad overall, or even still can be said good.

While in showing shadow details or in term of color reproduction, their performance is not much different, the LG B2 is better than the LG A2 when showing highlights of HDR images. On 2% and 10% white window test where they get their brightest peak brightness, the LG A2 get about 550 nits while the LG B2 can get about 675 nits. This means, highlights of HDR images will look more standout on the screen of the B2 OLED than A2 OLED. However, although not as bright as the LG B2, HDR peak brightness of the OLED A2 actually is bright enough to make highlights pop in most bright rooms. Nevertheless, it is not still bright enough for a truly impactful HDR image.

And like in SDR, their peak brightness varies depending on the content and larger areas of bright colors are noticeably dimmer. Even when they are showing throughout screen is bright, their peak brightness drops to below 150 nits. This means, bright scene cannot be shown as bright as small highlight. However, their HDR performance is good overall.

Conclusion

Overall, the LG B2 and A2 are great TVs for any usage. Whether you use them foe watching movies in a dark room, sports or TV shows in most bright rooms, playing video games, or enjoying HDR experience, their performance is really satisfying. They may lack some features found on the LG C2 like Evo Panel technology, etc, but they offer cheaper prices with the picture quality is not much different. Of course, if you have limited budget but want to get fantastic images quality offered by OLED TV, one of them may be a good option.

So, which is a better choice between them?  If you have a bit more budget, I think the LG B2 is a better choice. It has almost the same features that’s found on the higher series like C2 or G2. So, except it cannot get as bright as the higher series, its features and performance is not much different. On the other hand, the LG A2 lacks a lot of advanced features found on higher series, especially for improving gaming experience likes 120 Hz refresh rate panel, HDMI 2.1, VRR technology, BFI mode, etc. This makes its performance is not as good as the higher series, especially in handling motion or when used for playing games. However, if you don’t focus on gaming and HFR (High Frame Rate) content, the LG A2 can be a good alternative for you have limited budget. But of course, the decision now comes back to you according to your own preferences.
